The Perfect Time to Open Up—But Stay Secure

Right now, the Phoenix Valley metro area is experiencing some of the best weather of the year. With mild temperatures and cool breezes, it's the perfect time to open up the windows and let in some fresh air. But while you're enjoying the beautiful weather, it's also important to keep home security in mind. Leaving doors and windows open can invite more than just fresh air—it can be an open invitation to potential intruders.

Did you know most home break-ins happen during the day time, 10am - 3pm?

Home Security Risks in Phoenix, AZ

Statistically, summer is the most common time of year for home break-ins nationwide. However, here in Phoenix, we know that summer is when we're most likely to keep everything shut tight to keep the scorching heat out. That means our homes may actually be more secure during the hottest months! But during these cooler seasons, when it's tempting to leave doors and windows open, we should take a few extra precautions to ensure both comfort and security.

Home Security Tips to Enjoy the Weather Safely

1. Reinforce All Entry Doors

More than 50% of home break-ins occur through a door, and nearly 35% are right through the front door. Reinforce not only your front door but all entry doors to prevent them from being easily kicked in. Consider installing heavy-duty deadbolts, strike plates, and door reinforcement hardware to add an extra layer of security. Pictured you can see two homes we have recently done repairs to after a simple swift kick to an entry door allowed burglars to break in easily. With the changes we have made, it will take a lot more effort to get through these entryways, possibly causing intruders to move on to another home—keeping your valuables and family safe.

2. Use Smart Security Systems

Modern home security systems, including smart doorbells, security cameras, and alarm systems, can provide real-time alerts and help you monitor your home even when you're not there.

Ring donated more than 500 devices to homeowners in Newark back in 2018 for two specific neighborhoods to study. RING findings showed a reduction of home burglaries by more than 50% in these neighborhoods! Investing in a smart security system could significantly improve your home's safety.

3. Install Motion Sensor Lights

Outdoor lighting is a simple but effective deterrent. Motion sensor lights around entry points can help deter burglars by making it harder for them to approach unnoticed. Well-lit homes are statistically less likely to be targeted by criminals.

4. Keep Doors and Windows Locked at Night

While it’s tempting to sleep with a cool breeze, it’s best to lock up before bedtime. If you must leave a window open, use security locks that prevent it from being opened too wide. A 3"-6" opening should be a reasonable balance between fresh air and safety. Multiple devices are available to limit window openings while maintaining security.

5. Secure Sliding Glass Doors

Sliding glass doors are a common entry point for intruders. Reinforce them with a security bar or rod in the track to prevent forced entry. The locks on these handles tend to be weak or unreliable. If the door was installed properly, placing a large rod in the base of the track can prevent unauthorized entry.

Pro Tip: If you have a pool, Arizona law requires certain security measures, including locks or barriers on sliding doors, to prevent unsupervised access. Pool safety saves lives!

6. Be Mindful of Landscaping

Trim back large bushes and trees near windows and doors. Overgrown landscaping can provide cover for intruders attempting to break in. Keeping these areas well-maintained eliminates potential hiding spots and increases visibility.

7. Don’t Advertise That You’re Away

If you’re leaving town for a weekend getaway, avoid announcing it on social media. Share your vacation pictures after you return to avoid tipping off potential burglars. Use timers or smart switches on lights to make it look like someone is home, and have a neighbor keep an eye on things. Smart switches are also great for exterior lights, ensuring your home stays well-lit even when you're not there.
